Turn the Mic Up

with CDK on the Mic

Recently, we wanted to take a raw, in-depth look into the music industry. Our team was curious to know more about the professionals behind the scenes that are often known to hype the crowd and provide the creative sound that sets the tone for the stage. When we think about DJ's and Event Hosts and their role in entertainment, we often think of a person that engages and entertains. However, we knew that there had to be more to the artist that creates "the mood." When we caught up with Christian Kornegay, professionally known as CDK ontheMIC, we were excited to hear the passion that he shared about his experience and journey as a successful Events Host.

CDK ontheMIC shares that he would describe himself as a socialite, someone who enjoys being social and engaging with others. He has found much of his success to being genuine from being true to who he is as a person.

"I'm always finding a way to stay in the mix. I do this by staying up to date with what is going on around me and in the industry." -CDK ontheMIC

Check out the Interview Below.

What inspired you to start your hosting/entertainment journey?

The first time I hosted, I was booked by a good friend of mine named Quinton Dorsey. I liked the interaction with people and the energy that they brought.

What are some of the pros and cons of your industry?

Some of the pros are having your face recognized all around the country, being able to travel, working with celebrities, sometimes you get special treatment; in the industry, people look up to you as a public figure, and you gain a lot of followers. Cons are that it could be a 24-hour job, you don't clock out.

What do you like doing in your spare time?

I play 2K, in the band, study the craft and watch interviews.

If you had to describe your personality in one word, what would it be, and why?

I would describe my personality as a socialite. I'm always finding a way to stay in the mix. I do this by staying up to date with what is going on around me and in the industry.

What has been your greatest accomplishment?

My greatest accomplishment is being voted the #1 HBCU Host.

What motivates you to do what you do?

That's going back to how I started, the engagement with the people. Also being a mentor for other people.

What advice would you give to someone trying to start a music career?

Stay humble, quality over quantity knows the ins and outs of the industry and get your business together first.

Where do you see yourself in the next 10 years?

Headlining a television network, having a TV show with the #1 ratings in the World, hosting the biggest event. The sky's the limit.

When we asked CDK ontheMIC if industry challenges ever arise, he confirmed that he occasionally faces the tough task of knowing who he can trust, as it is not always easy during the rise.

"Some challenges I face are envious people and not really knowing who is genuine in your circle. I overcome them by keeping my circle small, sticking to the plans, and trusting the process." -CDK ontheMIC
